“This is the third time this week, No-name,” December said, skipping any semblance of a greeting. She didn’t deserve one, considering the circumstances. “Presumably you realize how many codes you’re breaking at this moment, just by being here?”
“Snowy!” Olivia laughed, turning to face the albino. Pocketing the spare change in her hand, she stepped closer to him. The accentuation of their height gap was obvious when she did so, but December ignored it. “Nice to see you too.” She chuckled again, rocking back and forth on her heels.
Exhaling loudly, December extended a hand. “You can’t continue to break code like this. Whether or not you decide to abide by our territory outlines, you owe me half of what you’ve taken. After all, even you aren’t exempt.” Grudgingly, the girl he addressed searched her pockets, extracting three ration cards and a handful of coins that didn’t amount to much. The offering was meager considering the influx of traffic in the meandering streets. “If you’re lying to me, I assure you there will be consequences,” he added, accepting the items.
“But you can afford this much, can’t you?” she asked after a moment, near pleadingly, verdant eyes wide. It would indeed have been a plead for assistance, had her sense of dignity not prevented her from begging. “Look, I’m not just here to bother you; I’m not looking for a handout either. There was a fire in my sector last week – arson, probably. We can both agree that sabotage isn’t unheard of, can’t we?” December nodded in agreement, considering the plots he’d previously faced. Any escalation, any shifts among the ranks could mean trouble. “That aside, my main source of income right now? Yeah, it’s gone, burnt to a crisp. So sorry for breaking code, but I’d rather die trying than starve to death.”
Another inhalation and exhalation. December collected his thoughts before eventually answering. “I can’t afford this, believe it or not.”
“But you’re doing better than ever!” Olivia exclaimed, interjecting before he could say another word. “You’re finally doing it, Snowy, you’re going to overthrow Control! All of Mars’ underworld is wrapped around your finger, and you’re saying you can’t afford to spare a few ration cards and some pocket change? Please,” the brunette scoffed. She stepped ever closer to him, their faces now mere inches apart. Just from her stance – the one hand on her hip, the cocky confidence of it – he could tell that she wouldn’t back down. Neither would he. “You haven’t changed much since we met, have you?”
“And just where did you get that idea from? My rank in this hierarchy is precisely the reason that I can’t assist you. Consider it this way. You claim that I should be able to help you because I’m climbing in rank – but should word get out of my… generosity, for lack of a better word, think of how they would view me.” December paused for a moment, and Olivia took a step back, tying her sepia hair back as she thought. Continuing, he spoke levelly, “My position in this game would be jeopardized if they knew that I’d saved a rival. Our world runs on fear; if my opponents don’t fear me, I have no power.”
“But what if they come after you, December?” she eventually asked, frowning. “I have a hunch it’s Control behind this. Who else would care that I’ve moved up three ranks in the last Sweep cycle?”
“Three ranks, Olivia?” the albino responded, eyebrows raised. Such a quick increase was nearly unheard of, equal to December’s own rapid ascension. “You shouldn’t be surprised this happened, if that’s the case. As far as a perpetrator goes, have you considered that the gangs you just overthrew could be behind it? Or the group you’re about to overthrow? It doesn’t necessarily have to be Control – almost anything you do could trigger an uprising like this, and you’re five ranks behind them to begin with. Now if you’re done stealing on my territory, I must be going.” He turned to leave, cloak drawn tightly about his shoulders. It was almost an expectation by this point that she would stop him, add in a final word or two –
And she did. “Wait!” Olivia called out, fingertips brushing his back. Though he stiffened, he didn’t immediately turn to face her, taking a moment to consider his options. A hint of satisfaction was evident as his crimson eyes met hers, but she retained the air of seriousness. “You’re involved too. I’m positive it’s Control, and they’re coming after you next.”

The moment you touch the rim of the bottle to throw it away, you can see the shake hands holding it. Drunk. You assume. You’ve seen it before. Lot of beer can and bottle get left by drunks. You don’t mind cleaning up. It’s like people watching the past. But this. This is old. The path you see through the eyes of the former owner of the bottle is unmarked. The owner didn’t walk on the hiking trails but through the forest. Perhaps they weren’t public yet. The bottle is lifted toward the owners mouth. Emptying it. Now holding it down. The bottle in one hand while the former owner tries to undo his pants!? Oh. Ew.

Back and Forth
It's all the same every day
You always have a lot to say
First you're angry, screaming loud
Then you're acting as if you're proud
First you say I screwed things up
Then you're giving me a free soda cup
You tell me I do nothing when I really tried
You ignore that you're killing me inside
Then you laugh and share the fun
As if a new day has begun
But it's not ok
It doesn't go away
You still make me feel like utter shit
Then a second later, forget about it
I do so much to please you
But all of my plans just fall through
You claim you show all the signs
You ignore everything the same of mine
When I wanna die you call me a liar

This is the beginning of a new story I'm starting, just a short story. An excerpt from December and Olivia's pasts, I suppose. There should be a few parts to it. It was initially a pretty quick write that I started yesterday during Geometry while everyone else was retaking tests, so it may not tie together too well. Initially it was only about December lecturing Olivia. The underlying idea to the story really only showed up halfway through.
Oh man, I really like writing dialogue between these two. Their relationship is so great.
That said, enjoy (or not)...
